How to Prepare for Your First Burlesque Class ✨

So you want to try burlesque? Stepping into this world is exciting, empowering, and a little bit glamorous! Whether it’s your first class or you’re returning for another round of fabulous, being prepared can make all the difference in helping you feel confident and ready to sparkle. Here’s everything you need to know to get the most out of your burlesque class.

1. Glitz & Glam: What to Wear ✨

Burlesque is all about self-expression, so your outfit should make you feel fabulous, fantastic and, most importantly, comfortable. Here’s what we suggest:

  • The Fit: Leggings, dance shorts, loose-fitting t-shirts or your cutest set of lingerie. We love our students to wear what they feel best in! The key is to wear something that allows you to move freely and see your body’s movements.

  • Heels (Optional): If you’d like to practice your struts and shimmies in heels, choose a comfortable pair with a secure strap and a manageable height. Dance heels or character shoes are ideal, but regular heels with sturdy support work too. Flats or bare feet are also great if heels aren’t your thing!

  • Layers for a Reveal: If the class involves a bit of classic burlesque flair, consider bringing a scarf, gloves, or an outer layer like a cardigan or robe for playful reveals during the choreography. Your class Instructress/Instructor will let you know what to bring when you enrol!

2. Bring the Goods! (We mean the essentials 😉)

Here’s a quick checklist of what to bring to class:

  • Water Bottle: We love a hydrated queen and in class, this is no different! Make sure you bring a drink with you.

  • Towel: A small towel can be handy for daintily dabbing away perspiration and the like.

  • Notebook or Phone: If you’d like to jot down choreography notes or take photos of poses for practice later, feel free to bring something for that purpose. Your Instructress/Instructor will also film your routine at the end of each class and share it to our private student group for you to reference.

3. Get Into the Right Mindset ❤️

Burlesque is about self-empowerment, creativity, having fun and building confidence. Here’s a few cute tips to help you prepare:

  • Let Go of Perfection: You don’t need to be a seasoned dancer or have perfect moves to enjoy burlesque. Come as you are, and remember that every shimmy and shake is a celebration of YOU.

  • Be Ready to Laugh: Burlesque often involves playful, exaggerated (and maybe suggestive) movements that might feel a little silly at first. Embrace the humor—it’s all part of the charm!

  • Bring an Open Mind: This is your space to explore, express, and try something new. Leave self-doubt at the door and step into your power.

  • Compersion not Comparison: As we said, this is your space to explore and when in class it be tricky to not compare yourself to others. Everyone in the class is on their own journey. Burlesque is about celebrating your individuality, so focus on what makes you feel good rather than comparing yourself to someone else. Your unique style is what makes burlesque so beautiful! Compersion is the feeling of joy that comes from celebrating another person's positive experiences, even when they don't directly benefit you. We practice compersion not comparison.

4. What to Expect in Class 💫

Every class is unique and each of our Instructresses/Instructors run theirs differently, but here are some common elements:

  • Warm-Up: Classes typically start with a cute warm-up to loosen your muscles and get you in the mood.

  • Technique Practice: You’ll likely practice a few different techniques that will bring your burlesque to life. Think shimmies, struts, shaking booty and more traditional dance techniques like turns, transitions and tricks (within reason).

  • Choreography: Most classes include a short routine that ties together the skills you’ve learned.

  • Cool Down: Classes often end with a stretch to help your body recover and keep you feeling fabulous.
